Linear Motion Flashcards
What is linear motion?
“Movement of a body in a straight or curved line where all parts move in the same distance, in the same direction, over the same time”
What is an example of linear motion?
A water skier being pulled at constant speed will travel in linear motion as all parts of their body will travel in the same direction and the same distance at the same time
What force causes linear motion?
A direct force
What is a direct force?
A force applied through the centre of mass
What do linear motion descriptors do?
Describe motion to analyse performance
What are the linear motion descriptors?
- Velocity
- Distance
- Speed
- Acceleration
- Displacement
What do graphs of linear motion do?
Represent the motion of a body moving in a straight or a curved line
What does a flat line show on a distance/time graph?
The body is at rest
What does a diagonal line going upwards on a distance time graph show?
The body is at constant speed
What does a curved line show on a distance/time graph?
The body is either accelerating or decelerating
What does a speed/time graph show?
It shows the speed of a body over a period of time
What does the gradient of a speed/time graph show?
Whether the body is:
- at rest
- travelling with constant speed
- accelerating
- decelerating
What is a velocity/time graph?
A graph that shows the velocity of a body over a period of time
What does the gradient of a velocity/time graph show?
Whether the body is:
- travelling at rest
- travelling at terminal velocity
- Accelerating or decelerating
What else can a velocity/time graph show?
The bodies velocity and change in direction
