Linear Kinematics Flashcards
What is kinematics
The study of description of the spatial and temporal characteristics of motion without regard to causative forces
Define linear motion
Motion along an axis in which all points of the system move at the same time, in the same direction, and the same distance with respect to the defined reference frame despite their location on the system
What is the difference between rectilinear and curvilinear motion
In rectilinear motion the linear path is straight but curvilinear motion the linear path is curved
What is angular motion
Motion when all points on a body or object move in circles about the same fixed central line or axis
What does general motion refer to
The combination of linear and angular motion
T/F Linear distance only indicates magnitude
True
Linear distance traveled is a ________ quantity and linear displacement is a _________ quantity
Scalar; vector
T/F Distance can be less than displacement
False, displacement can never be less than displacement
T/F Speed can never be less than velocity
True
Describe the different signs of acceleration
If you are speeding up, your acceleration is in the direction of your motion. If you are slowing down, your acceleration is in the opposite direction of your motion
T/F Direction of motion indicates the direction of acceleration
False, the direction of motion does not indicate the direction of acceleration
Describe in which situation acceleration would be zero
Velocity final = velocity initial
Describe in which situation acceleration would be positive
Velocity final > velocity initial
Describe in which situation acceleration would be negative
Velocity final < velocity initial
