Component
Everything that is part of a composition: headline, captions, photos, links, etc.
Composition
how components are arranged and combined to make a final product
Concept
Abstract elements that convey theme, connotation, message, and style
Alignment
How all the components line up with each other, based on edges or guides
Flow
Guides a viewer through the composition with the placements of components
Direction
Manages the movements of components in a composition
Placement
The position of elements on a spread. The placements of items on a page/spread determines their relevance and significance, and determines the spatial relationship between items.
Harmony
Agreement between elements, is a key component to developing a theme and appearance in the piece.
Unity
the feeling of harmony between components, creates a feeling of completeness.
Balance
The distribution of components, making it look and feel stable. May be symmetrical, asymmetrical, or radial.
Proportion
The relative size and scale of components that create a sense of unity; the relative size of all the components to the whole composition
Scale
How big elements look next to each other
Grouping
Elements that have something in similar; i.e. proximity, similarity, or alignment
Proximity
How close the components are to each other
Rhythm
The repetition or alternation of components in a composition
