Limestone Formations Flashcards
Flashcards to revise the formation of limestone formations
explain the formation of stalactites???
Stalactites: These are icicle-like formations that hang from the ceilings of caves. They form when water containing dissolved calcium carbonate drips from the ceiling. As the water drips and evaporates, it leaves behind a tiny deposit of calcium carbonate. Over time, these deposits build up, creating a stalactite.
explain the formation of Stalagmites???
These grow upward from the cave floor, typically below stalactites. They form similarly, as calcium-rich water drips to the cave floor, depositing calcium carbonate. If a stalactite and a stalagmite grow to meet, they can form a pillar.
explain the formation of Grikes???
These are deep fissures or cracks in limestone pavements. They form as a result of chemical weathering (solution) where rainwater, which contains dissolved carbon dioxide, reacts with limestone, gradually eroding it. Over time, these fissures can widen and deepen, creating a network of grikes
explain the formation of Clints???
These are the flat or block-like sections of limestone that remain between grikes. They are separated by grikes and can vary in size, creating a characteristic checkerboard pattern on limestone pavements.
