Limestone and it's uses Flashcards
What is limestone mainly made out of?
Calcium carbonate
What is the chemical formula for calcium carbonate?
CaCO3
How do you make cement?
Heat powdered limestone and powdered clay
How do you make concrete?
Mix cement powder with sand and aggregate
What is CaCO3 made up of?
Two calcium ions and carbonate ions
What does the 2+ and 2- charges tell us?
There is the same number of calcium ions and carbonate ions in CaCO3.
What is thermal composition?
Breaking down a chemical by heating
What happens when we heat limestone strongly?
The CaCO3 breaks down to form calcium oxide.
What is the Limestone thermal decomposition word equation?
Calcium Carbonate (heated) —-> Calcium Oxide + Carbon dioxide
How can we make lots of Calcium oxide
A rotary lime kiln
Describe the process of a rotary lime kiln.
- Fill with crushed limestone and heat.
- Calcium oxide comes out of the bottom of the kiln.
- Calcium dioxide is also produced as a waste gas.
(Thermal decomposition)
What happens when calcium carbonate reacts with acid?
Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) reacts with Sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and produces calcium sulfate (CaSO4) and Carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O).
With the limewater test how do we know the there is CO2?
It will turn cloudy.
