Limestone Flashcards
1
Q
Step 1:
A
- take a piece of limestone, wrap it in a wire to hold it secure. Tie this to a tripod and heat extremely strongly for 5 minutes
2
Q
(After step 1) why did the limestone glow?
A
Because it has been heated - endothermic jump to different energy levels (electrons)
3
Q
Equation for the reaction in step 1:
A
CaCO3 —> CaO + CO2
4
Q
What type of reaction is step 1?
A
Endothermic - giving out heat (decomposition)
5
Q
Step 2:
A
- once the piece is cooler, place it on a watch glass and add some water
- create a solution by pouring the mixture into a test tube and adding more water
- to one half add some U.I
6
Q
Equation for the reaction in step 2:
A
CaO + H2O —> Ca(OH)2
7
Q
What type of reaction is step 2?
A
Exothermic (hydration - adding more water)
8
Q
What colour did the U.I turn the solution and why in step 2?
A
Blue - it is an alkali
9
Q
Step 3:
A
- using a straw, blow through the second half of the solution
10
Q
Equation for the reaction in step 3:
A
Thermal decomposition —> CaO + CO2
11
Q
What type of reaction is step 3?
A
Precipitation
CaO + H2O —> Ca(OH)
