Limestone Flashcards
How do you produce calcium oxide from calcium carbonate?
By heating it
What are the main ingredients of concrete?
Cement, sand, water and crushed rock
When heated, limestone breaks down to form what?
Calcium oxide and carbon dioxide
Calcium oxide reacts with water to produce?
Calcium hydroxide
Limestone and its products are used for:
Cement, concrete and mortar
Carbonates react with acids to produce what?
Carbon dioxide, salt and water
When limestone is heated strongly the calcium carbonate it contains decomposed to form what?
Calcium oxide
Another name for calcium oxide is what?
Quick lime
Calcium oxide (quick lime is what colours when hot and cold?
Yellow when hot and white when cold
Quick lime (calcium oxide) reacts with water to form:
Calcium hydroxide
Calcium hydroxide is also called what?
Slake lime
Limestone is also used to do what?
Reduce excess acidity in lakes and soil
How does the limestone cycle go??
- Calcium carbonate heats to form calcium oxide ( quick lime) and CO2.
- The quick lime then reacts with water to form calcium hydroxide (slaked lime)
- When more water is added its filtered & becomes calcium hydroxide solution.
- CO2 is added to form calcium carbonate again
Calcium hydroxide reacts with carbon dioxide to produce:
Calcium carbonate
