Limbic System Lecture 28 Flashcards
What are the components of the limbic system?
-Part of cerebral cortex
*Cingulate gyrus
*Hippocampus
-part of the thalamus
part of hypothalamus
-associated nuclei
*amygdala
Functions of the limbic system
Olfaction Feeding behavior reproductive and sexual behavior autonomic regulation learning and memories pleasure / reward punishment Emotions
Explain the Olfaction aspect of Limbic system
The amygdala provides emotional response to smell
why do we think roses are good and skunk is bad? bc amygdala says so
Explain feeding behavior of limbic system?
lesions of the amygdala result in hyperphagia (excessive hunger) the stimulation of the amygdala causes chewing swallowing and other food ingestion related behavior
Explain Reproductive and sexual behavior as part of limbic system
in humans areas of the limbic system and hypothalamus are sensitive to sex steroids, Libido is function of limbic system and maternal behavior
Autonomic regulation of Limbic system
stimulation of limbic areas can
if you are scared–> increase in heart rate and increase in BP by hypothalamus–> fight or flight response
Learning and memory regulation by the limbic system
disruption of areas in the limbic system especially the hippocampus will disrupt abilities to form short term memories and form and retrieve long term memories interfering with learning
Pleasure/Rewards regulation by the limbic system
Nucleus accumbens is involved in the pleasure aspect of addictive behavior.
Punishment regulation by limbic system
includes the lateral hypothalamus, hippocampus, thalamus, amygdala, and dorsal midbrain. something that an organism will avoid it decreases frequency of certain behavior
What are the inner emotions
feelings(fear hope anger) contained within a person. associated mostly with amygdala
what’s the importance of amygdala in terms of emotion
nuclei that lie between temporal lobe and hippocampus important for generation of RAGE and FEAR
What is importance of hypothalamus in term of emotion
Important for feeling CALM
What happens if amygdala is damaged or destroyed?
you’ll be very calm–> have no motivation–> couch potato–> wont do anything–> starvation
What happens if hypothalamus is destroyed or damaged?
result in rage attacks in response to minor irritation
