What is a lamp and what are lanterns ?
A lamp: light bulb
lanterns: the lights
What is a warm wash, cold wash and a general cover ?
Warm wash: orange in colour usually interior location depiction often for warmth or comfort
Cold wash: blue in colour usually depicting outside location could also be used for hostile or cold environments
- both aren’t limited to location could enhance mood or a character
General cover: wash of the whole stage
What are some directions of lights ?
- Side light- angled from the side useful to highlight movement
- Back light -angled from behind to create silhouette
- Face light- angled from the front of an actor focusing on head height
- Floor light- angled at the feet of an actor
- Spotlight- isolates and enhanced an actor or area can be soft edged or hard edged
What are the four different types of lanterns (lights) ?
flood light: lamp, reflector; point and light. Can add colour but can’t shape the beam or add a gobo
Parcan: tin can either a lamp in it. Can add a gel
Fresnel: directional lens. Can make the beam bigger or smaller by moving the lamp closer or further away from the lens: barn doors on front direct the light and can have a gel
profile: a spot light. Smooth lens x2. Focus can create hard or soft edged beam. Gobo can be attached and colour added
What are some useful pieces of lantern vocab ?
- barn doors: metal plates mounted on the front of the Fresnel helping to focus the light
- shutters: internal plates which focus the light
- gobo: metal cut out creating a specific shape or effect used in a profile lantern
- practicals: lights which are onstage and operated by an actor
- gel: colour
- open white: lantern with out a gel
What is intensity ?
Refers to how dim or bright something is and is shown in %
10% being dim and 100% being full broth ness
For example you could have a warm wash at 70% interior but a window gobo at 100% as light coming through
