Lighting Flashcards
What are the five fundamental objectives of lighting?
1) visibility 2) depth and dimension 3) narrative emphasis 4) tone/mood 5) consistency
Discuss natural vs artificial lighting.
Natural light comes from nature. Artificial light comes from electricity
What is an available light source?
Light sources that already exist at a given location
What is motivated lighting?
Using movie lighting to create the look of what light would logically be in the scene.
What are the three properties of light?
1) intensity 2) hard vs soft 3) color/temperature
What is intensity?
The strength of the light (measured in footcandles)
What is the inverse square law in lighting? Test by moving light 3 ft away, 5 feet away, 9 feet away
Square the number and then make it a fraction. So 3 ft away = 1/9th the intensity (11%), 5 = 1/25 (4%), 9 = 1/81 (1%)
What is hard (or directional) light?
Light rays that travel straight and fall on the subject from a single angle.
What is soft (or diffused) light?
Light reflected off a surface that spreads the rays in multiple directions.
What is the color temperature of a tungsten light?
3200K
What is the color temperature of an HMI?
5600K
What can you use to change the quality of light
Gels and fliters
What are the 4 types of filters
1) Natural density (gray tinted) cut the light down (can decrease depth of field) 2) diffusion filters (soften the image. White = soft haze / black = flares the shadows 3) polarizing (blocks light rays that are not parallel to lens /reduces glare and reflections) 4) graduated (only affects a portion of the frame/image)
