Lighting Flashcards
What is Chiaroscuro?
use of strong contrasts between light and dark; bold contrasts affecting a whole composition
What are the Three Points of Lighting a set?
1) Key Light
2) Fill Light
3) Back Light
What is Key Light
main source of light in a scene; highlights subject in a scene
Fill Light
- a balancing light eliminates shadows from key light
Back Light
illuminates the back of a scene and the head and back of a subject
What are two of the three points of light that we focus on in order to create high key or low key lighting?
- ## Fill light is raised to almost the same level as the key light.
- Strong shadows obscure parts of the subject.
What is Contrast?
The ratio of dark to light in an image.
How to make soft lighting
- Halo effect on subject
- Achieved by using on screen props or off-screen equipment called diffusers
Aperture
A camera lens has an aperture (opening) that controls how much light passes through the lens and onto the film.
The wider the aperture, the more light comes through
Shutter Speed
The amount of time for light to pass through the lens and onto the film.
The longer the time, the more light comes through
ISO
International
Organization for
Standardization
ISO
definition
The sensitivity to light a camera or film stock has
The more sensitive, the more film grain or digital noise
Native ISO and Digital Noises
How clearly audience can see details by how sensitive film is to light
