Light (Y8) Flashcards
What are luminous sources?
Objects which create light
How does light travel?
In straight lines
What kind of objects do light waves travel through?
Transparent objects
What creates shadows?
Opaque objects
What do translucent objects do?
Show a glow of light through them
What do we call materials that let light pass straight through?
Transparent materials
What is the characteristic of opaque surfaces regarding light?
They can absorb light
What type of surfaces absorb light very well and reflect very little?
Black surfaces
What happens to light rays when they hit rough surfaces?
They are scattered
What is a plane mirror?
A flat mirror
What is the relationship between the angle of incidence and angle of reflection?
They are equal
What happens to light rays when they are reflected into the eye from a plane mirror?
They seem to come from a position behind the mirror
What is refraction?
The change in direction of light when it hits something transparent
What occurs at the interface between two substances during refraction?
Light changes direction
What happens to light when it is transmitted through glass?
It slows down and bends towards the normal
What is white light?
A mixture of colours
How can white light be split up?
Using a prism
What is the spectrum of white light?
- Red
- Orange
- Yellow
- Green
- Blue
- Indigo
- Violet
What is dispersion?
The splitting of colour into a spectrum
What produces a rainbow?
Water droplets in the air refracting sunlight
What primary colours can be mixed to create different colours?
- Red
- Green
- Blue
What does a red filter do?
Lets red light through and absorbs all other colours
What do white objects reflect?
All the colours
What does a red object reflect?
Only red and absorbs all other colours
What do black objects do?
Absorb all colours
