Light Spectrum Flashcards
What does G xR U V I M R
Gamma X-Ray UV Visible Infra Red Microwave Radio wave
Frequency is highest at the top and wavelength is shortest at the top.
Which rays are ionising
Gamma
UV
X-ray
What is ionisation
A high frequency wave that can pull electrons of electrons making them charged
This damages DNA which can cause mutations
What is frequency
Number of full waves per second
What is wavelength
The length of 1 wave per meter
What is velocity formulae
Velocity = frequency X wavelength
What speed do all Em waves travel (em are the waves in spectrum)
All travel at light speed 200*10 to power of 6 m/s
All transverse waves and can travel in a vacuum
What did Herschel and Ritter discover
Herschel found infra red and Ritter found UV
What is the visible colour order
Roygbiv
Red Orange Yellow Green Blue Indigo Violet
How was infrared discovered
Herschel used a prism to split white light into the different colours
He put thermometers in the different colour lights
He found that red was hottest and violet was coolest
He then put a thermometer past the red where there was no visible light and found that the thermometer went even hotter proving infra red was present
How was UV discovered
Ritter split white light with a prism
Ritter used silver nitrate that turned black in visible light
He found the silver nitrate turned black quickest in violet and slowest in red
He then placed silver nitrate past violet where there was no visible light and found it went blacker quicker then violet. This proved UV
Ionising radiation
Alpha and beta are charged particles
Gamma is a high frequency em wave
Uses and dangers of em waves
Gamma-Cancer treatment and sterilisation-Cancer and cell mutation
X-Rays-taking pictures through skin-Cell mutation and burns
UV-Security and washing powder-Skin cancer and burns
Light-Seeing-Can cause damage to eyes
Infra Red-Thermal imaging and remote controls-burns
Micro Waves-Microwaves and communication-Internal cooking
Radio waves-Radio, TV and radar-no dangers
