Light Dependent Reaction Flashcards
What are some simple notes about the Light Dependent reaction?
Require light to happen
Use energy from light to produce ATP and NADPH
Produce oxygen gas
Takes place in the thylakoid membranes of chloroplasts
How many steps are there in the light-dependent reaction?
11
What is the first step in the LDR?
Pigments in photosystem II absorb light
What is the second step in the LDR?
Light energy is absorbed by electrons
What is the third step in the LDR?
The electrons (high energy) are passed to the electron transport chain.
What is the fourth step in the LDR?
New electrons from water molecules keep the reactions going. H2O → H+ + e - electrons or 02
What is the fifth step in the LDR?
As electrons are removed from the water molecules oxygen is left behind and released into the air.
What is the sixth step in the LDR?
High energy electrons move through the electron transport chain from photosystem II to photosystem I
What is the seventh step in the LDR?
The energy is used to transport H+ from the stroma into the inner thylakoid space.
What is the eighth step in the LDR?
Pigments in photosystem I use energy from light to reenergize electrons and this is picked up by NADP + to produce NADPH
What is the ninth step in the LDR?
The movement of the H+ ions creates a high concentration of charge across the membrane - this provides the energy to make ATP
What is the tenth step in the LDR?
ATP synthase is an enzyme/carrier protein that allows the H+ ions to pass through the membrane.
What is the eleventh step in the LDR?
As H+ ions pass through the ATP synthase an ADP and phosphate bind in order to form ATP
What is a simple conclusion about the Light Dependent reaction?
Light-dependent reactions use water, ADP, NADP + and produce oxygen and ATP, and NADPH
