Light Bulbs Flashcards
LED
-Light Emitting Diodes
-semiconductor diode electronic devises (only semiconductors are used, it can only flow in one direction which makes it a fast source of light)
-found in small electronic displays
-directional and weak
PROS
-no heat
-fast
-long-lasting
-cold doesn’t matter
-no poison
-can dim
-can be all colours
-can be soft, warm, or bright
CONS
-costs more
-directional light (doesn’t spread easily)
Incandescent
- an electric current passes through the filament, heating it up to a point that produces light
- a glass mount allows the electrical contacts to run through the envelope without gas/air leaks
- small wires support the filament
- Joseph Wilson Swan received the first patent with a carbon filament in 1879
- not efficient
CFL
-Compact Fluoescent light
-they drive an electric through a tub that contains mercury vapour and argon
-it creates ultraviolet light which turns into visible light
-takes time to heat up and emit the full brightness
PROS
-less energy used
-less cost
-can be soft, warm, or bright
-bight light that spreads evenly
CONS
-sensitive to the cold
-contains mercury
-takes a moment to heat up and reach full brightness
-no dimming
