Light And Shadows Study Guide Flashcards
What ways can I be safe when working with light?
- View the sun through a pinhole camera
- View light produced during welding through #14 welders glasses.
Can you identify two sources of light? [emit/reflect]
Emit: sun, flashlight, firefly, light bulb, TV
Reflect: mirror, moon, shiny plastic, TV
What are the two types of light?
- Artificial (man-made)
2. Natural
How do light beams travel?
Light travels in a straight line
How is a shadow formed?
A shadow is a dark image or figure cast on the ground. It is created when an object blocks the path of light.
What materials will or will not block light?
Block: Opaque
Will not block: Transparent
Translucent cast lighter shadows
What is refraction? When does this happen?
Refraction is the bending of light. Light bends as it passes through from one medium to another.
What is reflection?
Reflection is when light bounces back off a surface
What makes a good reflector? Examples?
A smooth, shiny surface
Examples: mirrors, calm lake, polished metals
What happens when white light enters a prism?
It bends (refracts) creating a spectrum of colours/ rainbow.
What does ROY G BIV stand for?
It explains the colours in the rainbow. Red Orange Yellow Green Blue Indigo Violet
What refracts white light?
- Prism
- Crystal
- Water droplet
What is visible light made up of?
Waves
What happens to shadows early or late in the day (when the sun is low in the sky).
Shadows get longer.
The angle of the sun causes a shadow to change what?
It’s length.
