Light and Optics Flashcards
What’s the wavelength range of visible light?
400 - 700 nm
What are real and virtual images?
Real: Light rays actually converge at this point
Virtual: Light only appears to converge at this point
Mirror equation
1/o + 1/i = 1/ƒ = 2/r
If image distance is +, image is real (in front), if - it’s virtual (behind)
Magnification equation
m = -i/o
- mag = inverted image
+ mag = upright image
Formula for index of refraction
n = c/v
Snell’s law
n1sinØ1 = n2sinØ2
How to determine real vs. virtual side of lenses?
R is side opposite object, V is side of object
How to determine sign of focal length?
- = Diverging \+ = Converging
How to determine sign of radius of curvature?
\+ = C is on R side - = C is on V side
Lens power
P = 1/ƒ
Focal length for multiple lens system in contact
1/ƒ = 1/ƒ1+ 1/ƒ2 … + 1/ƒn
Power of multiple lens system in contact
P = P1 + P2… + Pn
Magnification for lenses not in contact
Each lens uses the image from the last, so
M = m1 * m2… * mn
Location of dark spots with diffraction grating + lens
asinθ = nλ a = slit width, n = 1,2,3...
Formula for double slit experiment maxima
dsinθ = mλ
