light and EM spectrum Flashcards
paper 1 - 5.1 to 5.24
what is total internal reflection
when a wave is refracted so much at a boundary that it’s reflected back into a material rather than being transmitted into new material. occurs when a wave travels into a less dense material at an angle of incidence > than the critical angle of the material
what is specular reflection
when parallel waves are reflected in single direction by smooth surface
what is diffuse reflection
when parallel waves are reflected in lots of directions by rough surface
what is a filter
a material that only transmits certain wavelengths of light
convex/convergent lens
lens that bulges outwards and causes light rays parallel to axis to converge at principal focus
concave/divergent lens
lens that curves inwards and causes light rays parallel to axis to diverge so appear to have come from principal focus
what is a real image
an image formed when light rays from a point on an object come together at another point
what is a virtual image
an image that is formed when rays appear to have come from 1 point but have actually come from another - light rays don’t actually pass through point
what is the Electromagnetic spectrum
continuous spectrum of all possible wavelengths of EM waves
intensity meaning & units
power per unit area, W/m^2
3 properties when describing images
-magnified/diminished
-upright/inverted
-real/virtual
