what are the 4 properties of light?
Quantity, colour, quality, direction
what is used to measure light?
Light meter
what is quantity of light?
how much light there is
what is the quality of light?
what kind of light it is (soft or hard light)
what are some examples of warm colours?
red, orange, yellow, magenta
what are some example of cold colours?
blue, cyan, green
what is horror lighting?
when light is below eye level
what does soft light do?
produces gentle mid-tone shadows of low contrast
what does hard light do?
produces crisp dark shadows with high contrast
what can be used to create soft light?
softbox
what can be used to create hard light?
flash with a small reflector
what is a histogram?
a representation of tonal range
what does the left side of the histogram represent?
shadows
what does the right side of the histogram represent?
highlights or bright areas
what does the middle of the histogram represent?
the mid-tones
what is clipping?
the spiking of the histogram at one side resulting in loss of detail
what is high key?
bright lighting that reduces/eliminates shadows
what side of the histogram would it be on?
the right
where is high key used?
high-fashion, product images
what is low key?
replacing the light feel with a dramatic tone
under exposed is NOT low key
what are black and white points?
define which areas should be black or white
photographs lightest or darkest points
maximises contrast
what is continuous lighting?
light that is on for the entirety of the photograph
what is an example of continuous lighting?
natural light, window light, lamp
what is flash lighting?
light that is only available for a quick moment
what is backlighting?
when the main light is behind the subject
what is rim lighting?
highlights the contours of the subject only (strong mood and atmosphere)
how is rim lighting done?
hidden light behinds the subject
what is contre-jour lighting?
a dark shape in front of the source of light while keeping all details (subject should be black and light should be constant)
what is incident light?
