Light Flashcards
Universal wave equation which allows us to relate to speed, wavelength, and frequency
v = f λ
All different radiations (largest to smallest)
Radio Microwave Infrared Visible UV X-ray Gamma Ray
EM radiation travels at the same speed, what is it?
300 000 000 m/s
Wavelength
The wavelength of a wave is the distance between adjacent peaks and is measure in meters (m). (wavelength can change depending on frequency and speed)
Amplitude of a wave
The amplitude of a wave is the distance from the equilibrium point to the top of a peak. (No units)
Formula for period of wave
time / # of oscillations
T=f^-1
Period of wave
The period of wave is the time it takes to complete one oscillation and is measured in seconds.
Frequency of a wave
The frequency of a wave is the number of oscillations which happen per unit time and is measured in Hertz (Hz).
Electromagnetic spectrum
The electromagnetic spectrum is the collection of all types of EM radiation.
How is light created?
Light is created by oscillating charged particles: “Electromagnetic radiation”
Light
Light is a wave, Transmitting energy without transmitting matter
Do planets, comets, asteroids and meteoroids reflect light?
Yes
Why do stars emit light?
Stars emit light because their temperature is very high, they are very hot.
