light Flashcards
What is diffused reflection
Reflection of light in many directions from an uneven surface
What is regular reflection
Light bounces off a very smooth surface which produces a clear sharp image
Concave mirrors
Concave mirrors curve inwards. When light is shone onto a concave mirror the light forms a focus point inside the curve. The light spreads out.
Convex mirrors
Convex mirrors bend outwards. When light is shone onto a convex mirror it focuses it onto one point.
Why do you see lightning before you hear thunder
Because light travels much faster than the speed of sound.
Why does a straw look bent in water
This is because of refraction. This occurs when light passes through a transparent material. Light slows down when passing through the material and this changes its direction. The light bends towards the normal line.
Light travels in the form of…
Waves
What is refraction
Occurs when light passes through transparent material. This causes the light to slow down and bend towards the normal line.
What is the difference between a longitudinal and transverse wave
Longitudail waves compress particles in front of the source. Transverse waves’ oscillations are perpendicular to the direction the wave is travelling.
