ligaments of the elbow Flashcards
ligaments of the elbow joint
ulnar collateral (medial collateral)
radial collateral (lateral collateral)
joint capsule
ulnar collateral ligament
a triangular shaped ligament with 3 parts
parts of the ulnar collateral ligament
anterior
posterior
oblique
anterior part of ulnar collateral ligament
well defined
stabilizer to valgus stress
from 20-120 degrees of flexion
posterior part of ulnar collateral
not as distinct
some fibers may blend with the medial capsule
less important in valgus stability
oblique part of the ulnar collateral
keeps the joint surfaces approximated (in contact w/ each other)
does add to some valgus stability
radial collateral ligament
fan shaped
provides reinforcement for radiohumeral articulation
some varus protection
assists in providing resistance to distraction of joint
joint capsule
a single joint capsule encases the humeroradial, humeroulnar and superior (proximal) radioulnar joint
capsule is fairly large, loose and weak both anteriorly and posteriorly
sides are reinforced by the radial and ulnar collateral ligaments
ligaments of the proximal radioulnar joint
annular ligament
quadrate ligament
oblique cord
annular ligament
surrounds the radial head
lined w/ articular cartilage which is continuous with the cartilage of the radial notch of the ulna
binds the radius to the radial notch of the ulna
wraps around the radial head and attaches back on the ulnar head
quadrate ligament
reinforces the inferior aspect of the joint capsule
helps maintain the radial head in contact w/ the radial notch
limits the spin of the radial head
oblique cord
will limit supination
distal radioulnar joint ligaments
anterior radioulnar ligament
posterior radioulnar ligament
anterior radioulnar ligament
limits supination
provides anterior reinforcement of the joint
posterior radioulnar ligament
limits pronation
provides posterior joint reinforcement
