Lift Augmentation Flashcards
Main types of flaps (4)
Plain Split Fowler Slotted Leading edge
Purpose of flaps
To increase lifting efficiency of the wing and decrease stall speed
What does clean aircraft mean
That flap and landing gear are retracted. It is in its most aerodynamic state
What type of flaps produces the most drag
Split flap
Hinged at lower section of wing, so when extended creates alot of turbulence
3 leading edge devices
Krueger flap
Slats
Slotted leading edge
Define slats
Portion of leading edge which moce forward and down to create a path of air similar to a slot.
How are slats moved
Automatically by Aerodynamic forces
Mechanically by hydraulics, or electric
Advantage of slats
When retracted make wing clean.
Yet the benefits of slots are available when needed
Define slots
A leading edge device incorporated into leading edge of wing. Used to allow airflow to remain attacheded and re-energize the boundary layer of wing.
Where are slots normally and why
Near wing tip.
Allows roots to stall while stall having lift generated on outer wing
Krueger flaps adv.
Clean wing at high speeds.
During landing are deployed forward and downward to increase camber and wing area. Therfore increases lift
Types of boundary layer control (3)
Blowing/sucking
Directed air
Vortex generators
How vortex generators work
Generates vortices that delay the airflow separation from the wing by pulling high energy air downwards to into the boundary layer
Define blowing and sucking lift augmentation
Blowing re energizes the boundary layer using air ejected at high speeds in the same direction as the boundary layer
Sucking draws off the boundary layers sublayer through slots or porous skin which decreases the thickness of the boundary layer, and replaces it with faster moving air
Define directed air
Directed air is from jets or propeller eflux over the wing or flaps
