Lifesaving Flashcards
AMI Systems - Lifesaving
Davit
A davit is a crane-like device used for supporting, raising, and lowering equipment such as lifeboats and rescue boats, or transferring of ship’s stores.
Embarkation ladder
The ladder provided at survival craft embarkation stations to permt safe access to survival craft after launching.
Emergency Escape Breathing Device (EEBD)
Emergency Escape Breathing Device (EEBD) is a supplied-air or oxygen device only used for escape from a compartment that has a hazardous atmosphere.
Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB)
The EPIRB is a tracking device that transmits a signal via satellite on a specified ban to locate a lifeboat, life raft, ship or people in distress.
Falls
Falls, another name for wire rope, are used to lower and raise the lifeboat out of the water, and are part of the davit system.
Fire
Fire is a rapid chemical reaction that combines fuel and oxygen to produce heat and light.
Float-free arrangment
A float-free arrangement allows a raft or survival craft to float away without entanglement with the vessel’s structure or equipment.
Four Gas Meter
A four gas meter is configured with sensors to monitor gases in the environment including oxygen, carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide and lower explosive limit of various gases.
Hydrostatic release unit (HRU)
A Hydrostatic release unit is a pressure activated mechanism designed, to automatically deploy a life raft, when the raft is submerged at depth between 1.5 and 4 meters.
Jacob’s cradle
Jacob’s cradle is a man overboard recovery device used to bring the person onboard the vessel.
Lifeboat release gear
Lifeboat release gear is used to connect to and detach from the launching appliance and the falls.
Messenger line
Messenger line is the thin line, called the messenger line, that is shot through a rocket projectile line throwing equipment first, and is used as a “messenger” for the heavy line.
Sponson
A sponson is a feature on watercraft that extends from the hull or other part of the vessel to aid in stability while floating or to act as a securing point for other equipment.
Tending line
Tending line is used to help rescue a firefighter who is wearing a SCBA.
Weak link
The weak link prevents a sinking vessel from pulling the life raft down with it if the water is deeper than the length of the painter.
