Life Skills Chapter 1 Flashcards
- Produces estrogen
- Eggs are stored here
- Size of almond
Ovary
- Unfertilized egg
- Female reproductive
cells joins with male reproductive cells to produce new life - 200 ……. per inch
- Lives approximately 12-24 hours
Ovum
- 2 tubes leading from ovary to top of uterus - one each side
- Ovum fertilized by sperm here
- 4 inches long and very narrow (With of needle)
Fallopian Tube
- Also called womb, (FETUS DEVELOPED HERE)
- shape and size of upside down pear 3 inches long
- lining discharges if ovum is NOT fertilized
Uterus
lining of the uterus
endometrium
opening of the uterus
cervix
- Muscular tube leading from uterus to outside of body
- Passage for menstrual flow
- Birth canal passage
- Organ for intercourse
- Tampons inserted here
- Leads to organs of reproduction
Vagina
The external female reproductive organs
vulva
soft tissue that covers the pubic bone and serves as a protective cushion for the reproductive organs
mon pubis
the outer folds of skin that surround the opening of the vagina
Labia Majora
A small, highly sensitive organ located between the labia minor or inner folds
clitoris
The opening at the end of the urethra. The urethra is a tube that carries urine from the bladder to the outside of the body
Urethral Opening
A thin membrane that stretches across the vaginal opening
Hymen
Organs composed of fatty tissue that are sensitive and that provide milk for new born baby
Breast
A pair of glands located near the labia minora which secrete fluid during sexual excitement
Bartholins glands
The release of a mature egg cell from the ovary that usually occurs once from each moment
Ovulation
When you get your period
Menstruation
The union of an egg and a sperm cell that occur in the fallopian tube. This process is also called conception
Fertilization
The process by which a fertilized egg grows and develops in the mothers uterus and forms a new individual. In humans, this process lasts about nine months
Pregnancy
The delivery of the baby from the mothers uterus
childbirth
Female Changes during puberty
- Breast
- Broadening of pelvis
- Soft and smooth skin
- Deposition of fat in the thighs and buttocks
- Pubic Hair
- Sex drive
- Ovulation
- Menstruation
- Holds testes
- Hangs on outside in order to regulate temperature, (too warm inside)
Scrotum
- Produces testosterone
- Produces sperm
- Glands that hang in skin sack (scrotum)
Testes
- With tails
- Male reproductive cells
- Joins with female reproductive cells to produce new life
- 500 …. per inch
- Lives approximately 48 - 72 hours
Sperm
- Storage factory for sperm
- On back of testes
Epididymis
- Tube inside testicles leading from testes to penis
- Carries sperm from testicles to seminal vesicle
Vas Deferens
- Releases fluid containing nutrients
- Mixes with sperm to form semen
- Sperm formed here
Seminal Vesicles
- Releases thick, milky fluid which enhances motility of sperm cells
- Mixes with sperm to form semen, (This fluid is ejaculated during orgasm)
Prostrate Gland
- Also called bulbourethral glands
- Releases fluid in responce to sexual stimulation (This fluid is ejaculated during orgasm)
Cowpers Glands
- Tube inside penis where urine is eliminated from bladder Passageway fro semen when ejaculated
Urethra
- Used for urination
- Releases sperm
- Used for sexual intercourse
- Made of erectile tissue. (Lots of blood vessels, tills with blood causing erection)
Penis
Tubes inside the testes that contain and convey sperm
Seminiferous Tubules
Short tube that passes into the prostate gland and opens into urethra
Ejaculatory
Components of semen
- Sperm cells
- Nutrient fluid from the seminal vesicle
- Acidic Fluid from the prostate gland
- Lubricating and neutralizing
Path of sperm cells
- Produced in the testes
- Stored on the epididymis
- Travel through the vas deferens
- Combine with fluid from the seminal vesicle
- Combine with fluid from the prostate glands
- Combine with fluid from the coppers glands
- Now called semen, travels through the urethra in the penis
- Leaves the body through the opening in the penis during ejaculation
Male changes during puberty
- Larger muscles
- Longer, heavier bones
- Thicker, tougher skin
- Deeper voice
- Growth, body hair
- Development of pubic hair
- Greater muscle mass
- V-shaped torso
- Enlargement of penis scrotum, and tests
- Increased metabolic rate
- Sex drive
- ejaculation
