Life Skills Flashcards

Just because you probably should know how to do some basic things like change a tire and use hand tools doesn't mean you do. This deck acts a refresher for all those day-to-day hurdles you may face, like those above, and some you will (hopefully) never face, like wild animals!

Q

If you are out in the wilderness and see a bear, how should you react?

A

Your reaction should depend on your surroundings.

If the bear has stumbled into a populated area, OR if the bear has approached you, attempt to frighten it away (make noise, yell, stand together as a large group).

If you encounter a bear in the wilderness, remain at least 50 yards away from it, and run downhill if possible. (Bears cannot run downhill very well.)

If the bear is already upon you, you can consider playing dead, but that doesn’t always work!

Q

What are some guidelines to follow when creating a budget?

A

The easiest way to begin keeping a budget is to first calculate your monthly expenses (e.g. rent, car payment, insurance, etc.). Then determine your monthly income. Based on these figures, you can determine whether or not you can afford all of your monthly expenses, and if there is any money remaining.

Q

You notice your credit card has been used to make unauthorized purchases – what should you do next?

A

First, call the bank and ask them to suspend your account. There will be an investigation into the charges on your account, which will likely be dropped, and you will receive a new credit card.

Future steps include monitoring your account and making sure other accounts have not been compromised in a larger form of identity theft.

A
  • Unplug valuable electronic devices such as computers or televisions, in case of a power surge
  • Stay inside and away from doors and windows
  • Do not use plumbing, such as sinks or showers, as electicity can travel through the pipes
  • Have flashlights ready in the event of a power outage
23

A
  • File a police report
  • Notify the bank if your debit card was stolen

24
Q

You’re moving – what are some key steps to take during the process?

A
  • Request quotes and book a moving company
  • Sort through your belongings and get rid of things you will not use again
  • Begin packing 2-4 weeks in advance
  • Change your address at the local post office
25
Q

What are the most important considerations when constructing an outdoor shelter?

A
  • Try to build close to water, but not directly on the water in case of flooding
  • If possible, build the shelter against a strong object nearby, such as a tree
  • Make sure the structure is large enough for you to fit inside comfortably
  • Use sturdy branches as the frame of your structure
  • Use leaves, grass, moss, twigs to cover the frame
26
Q

You’re packing for a vacation – what are some good packing strategies?

A
  • Make a list of everything you want to pack
  • Lay out your items before you put them into the suitcase to make sure you will have enough room
  • Roll clothing instead of folding
  • Only pack essential clothing
  • Laying outfits out in advance is helpful
27
Q

You need to paint a room in your house – where do you start and what are some painting tips?

A
  • First, clean the walls with a sponge, water, and a little bit of dish soap
  • Use blue painter’s tape to tape along the moldings and any other edges (e.g. power outlets, light switches)
  • Prime the walls before painting. Priming results in a better finish
  • Use a roller to paint one wall at a time. Be careful not to use too much paint - it should just cover the wall, and should not drip
  • Use a brush, instead of a roller, on the edges
28
Q

What are some tricks for remembering people’s names?

A
  • Repeat their name over and over again
  • Use a rhyme or mnemonic device (e.g. “Bart likes art.” “Chris collects coins.”)

29
Q

What is the difference between a Phillips and a flat head screwdriver?

A

Flat head screwdrivers have one edge.

Phillips head screwdrivers have a crossed x pattern. Phillips head screwdrivers provide more torque.

30
Q

What should you do if you or someone around you has been bitten by a snake?

A
  • Stay very still and do not speak. This prevents the venom from moving more quickly throughout your body
  • Reposition the body so that the bite is at or below heart level
  • Gently clean and cover the wound
  • Remove any jewelry or tight garments – swelling may occur
  • Seek medical attention.
31
Q

You’re under a time constraint and have to finish some reading, do you know how to speed read?

A
  • One strategy is to stop subvocalization. Even though we don’t realize we are doing this when we read, it is likely we are imaging the words being spoken in our minds. This takes extra time
  • A second method is to use a pointer, to encourage reading at a faster pace. The faster the pointer moves, the faster you read
  • Skimming is a third option, in which the text is quickly looked over for main ideas
32
Q

How do you start a fire without using matches or a lighter?

A

You will need:

  • tinder (items that will catch fire easily such as paper, leaves, or bark)
  • dry wood
  • a flat piece of wood to use as your “fire board”
  • a “spindle stick” (tall, strong, straight branch)
  • a piece of bark the size of the fire board

Steps:

  1. Cut a small notch in your fire board
  2. Place the fire board on top of the bark
  3. Rapidly turn the spindle stick back and forth between your palms - the friction should cause a spark
  4. Place hot embers collected on the bark into the tinder
33
Q

How do you check tire pressure?

A
  • Check the manual of your vehicle for the PSI number, or how much pressure your tire should have
  • Insert a tire air pressure gauge into the valve stem. (A bit of air will escape - this is nothing to be alarmed about.)
  • Read the meter on the tire air pressure gauage and compare it to your vehicle’s recommended PSI. (The reading should be within 5 PSI of the recommended PSI.)
34
Q

What should you do in the event of a tornado?

A

If possible, stay in the basement of the building you are in. If there is no basement, remain on the lowest floor of the building, in the most interior room. Take cover under a table if possible.
