Life Science- Plant Tissue Flashcards
Meristematic
Cells are always dividing
Growth point of cells
Meristematic grows
Stem taller (buds) and wider (cambium) Root deeper (root tip)
Epidermal
Epi- outside Dermal- skin Covers outside of plants Closely packed- protection Stem + leaves
Epidermal have
Waxy cuticle
Root - not cuticle
Specialized epidermal cells
Guard cell
2 guards- stomata
Breathing pores in leaves + stem
Ground tissue
Main Parenchyma Chlorenchyma Collenchyma Sclerenchyma
Parenchyma
Basic plant cell Thin permeable cell walls Fill spaces Air spaces between them Large vacuole
Chlorenchyma
Parenchyma + chloroplasts
Photosynthesis
Green leaves + stem
Palisade mesophyll cell- closely packed, green leaves
Spongy mesophyll cell- loosely packed, air space to store CO2
Collenchyma
Thickened cells walls at corners with cellulose
Cells are still alive - strength to stems
Flexible
More closely packed than parenchyma
Sclerenchyma
Cell is impregnated with lignin (impermeable)
Cell dies
Hollow cell
Occurs near soft phloem and young xylem
Vascular tissue
Transport tissue
Phloem
Xylem
Phloem
Transports food and nutrients down
Sieve tubes + companion cell
Both living tissue
Xylem
Transports water up
Cell is dead, hollow tubes
Vessels and tracheids
Strengthened and thickened with lignin (different patterns on inner wall annular/rigid, spiral reticulate)
In tracheid cells are connected by pits (small holes)
