Life On Earth-Energy In Ecosystems Flashcards
Competition
The interaction between organisms for the same limited resources.
Carnivore
An organism which only eats other animals.
Consumer
An organism that needs to eat other organisms for energy.
Primary consumer
First consumer and eats the producer.
Secondary consumer
Eats the first consumer.
Decomposer
Organisms such as bacteria and fungi that breakdown dead organic material.
Denitrifying bacteria
Breaks down nitrates to release nitrogen gas into the air.
Herbivore
An organism which only eats plants.
Interspecific competition
Members of different species compete for the same resources.
Intraspecific competition
Members of the same species compete for the same resources.
Nitrifying bacteria
Converts ammonium into nitrites and then nitrites into nitrates.
Nitrogen fixing bacteria
Converts nitrogen gas into nitrates.
Omnivore
An organism which eats plants and animals.
Producer
A green plant able to produce food by photosynthesis.
Pyramid of biomass
The total mass of organisms a each level of a food chain.
