life on earth Flashcards
what is a species?
a group of organisms that can breed to produce fertile offspring
what is biodiversity?
the variety of plant and animal life in the world/particular habitat
what is a population?
a group of organisms of one species in an ecosystem
what is a producer?
a green plant that makes its own food through photosynthesis
what is a consumer?
general name given to organisms unable to photosynthesise and is dependent on a ready-made food source
what is a herbivore?
an animal that feeds on plant material only
what is a carnivore?
an animal that feeds on flesh and other plant material only
what is an omnivore?
an animal that feeds on both plant and animal material
what is a predator?
an animal that hunts and eats other animals for food
what is prey?
an animal that is hunted by other animals
what is a food chain?
energy flow relationship
green plant > organism >other organism ect.
what is a food web?
complex relationship composed of several inter-related food chains
what is an ecosystem?
natural biological unit made up of all the living organisms and the non-living surroundings with which all the organisms interact
what is an abiotic factor?
non living factors affecting ecosystems
what is a biotic factor?
living factors affecting ecosystems
what is a niche?
an organism’s role within its community. Includes:
-making use of light resources
-temperature resources
-nutrient availibility resources
-interaction with other organisms
what is interspecific comp.?
compitition between different species
what is intraspecific comp.?
compitition between the same species
what are some things animals compete for?
-water
-food
-mates
-space
what are some things plants compete for?
-light
-water
-space
-minerals
biotic factors examples
-food availibility
-grazing and predation
-disease
-compitition for resources
abiotic factors examples
-temperature
-light intensity
-soil moisure
-pH
what is an indicator species?
species that, in their presence or absence, can reveal the level of pollution in a certain area
what is most energy lost as throughout a food chain?
-heat
-uneaten parts
-waste production
-movement
