Life on Earth Flashcards
What is an ecosystem?
A natural biological unit which is made up of living and non-living parts e.g. rain forest, arctic, desert.
What is an Abiotic Factor
A factor that relates to a non-living eature of an ecosystem
What are 2 examples of Abiotic Factors?
Light intensity & pH
What are 4 examples of ecosystems?
Rainforest, Desert & Arctic
What is a biotic factor?
A factor that relates to some aspects of living organisms in an ecosystem
What are 3 examples of biotic factors?
Competition for food, disease & number of predators
What does a food chain show?
How energy moves through an ecosystem.
What is the general order of food chains?
It starts with a green plant followed by a series of animals, each of which obtains its energy from the previous organism.
What is a food web?
A complex relationship composed of several inter-related food chains.
What do the arrows in the food chain show?
The direction of energy flow.
How should fox eats rabbit which eats grass be represented with arrows?
Grass –> Rabbit –> Fox
Define Producer
Green plant that makes its food by photosynthesis
(Ex: Oak Tree)
Define Primary Consumer
Herbivorous animal that eats the producer in a food chain
(Ex: Rabbit)
Define Secondary Consumer
The animal that eats the primary consumer in a food chain
(Ex: Fox)
Define Herbivore
Animal that feeds on plant materials only
(Ex: Sheep)
Define Carnivore
Animal that feeds on flesh and other animal material
(Ex: Lion)
Define Omnivore
Animal that eats both plant and animal material
(Ex: Pig)
What can a quadrat do?
It can be used to sample a population of plants.
What is Biodiversity?
The variety of life on earth
As the human population increases …
the demand for food and shelter increases
When did the Tasmanian Tiger go extinct?
1936
When did the Great Auk go extinct?
1844
When did the west African Black Rhinoceros go extinct?
2010s
When did the Franklinia plant go extinct?
1803
