Life on Earth Flashcards
What is a Habitat?
A habitat is where an organism lives
What is an Ecosystem?
All living things and non-living things in an area
What is a Biome?
A giant ecosystem characterised by its climate and vegetation
What is a Community?
All populations of an organism in an ecosystem
What is Population?
All members of one species an ecosystem
What is a Niche?
The role of one species in an ecosystem
What is a Carnivore?
A carnivore only eats other consumers (meat)
What is a Consumer
A consumer cant make its own food
What is a Herbivore
A herbivore only eats producers (plants)
What is an Omnivore?
An omnivore eats consumers and plants (meat and plants)
What is a Producer
A producer produces its own food
What is biodiversity?
Biodiversity is the huge range of organisms living in an ecosystem
What is Biological keys?
Biological keys are used to identify organisms
What are Biotic factors?
Living factors that affect an ecosystem
e.g: disease, predators and food availability
What are Abiotic factors?
Non-living factors that affect an ecosystem
e.g: temperature, light intensity and wind speed
What is an Innate behaviour?
Instinctive behaviour that animals can do from birth
What is Learned behaviour?
Behaviour that is taught or gained through experience or play
What is Habituation?
Animals learn that a particular stimuli will not cause it harm so they stop responding. This is beneficial as they waste energy when responding
What is a Structural adaptation?
A body feature that help n animal or plant to survive
What is a Physiological adaptation?
A body process that helps an animal or plant survive
What is a Behavioural adaptation?
An animal or plant’s response to a stimuli
What is population?
The total number of one species in an ecosystem
-Many factors affect the chances of survival for an individual in a population
How do you measure temperature
You measure it with a thermometer in *c
How do you measure light intensity?
You measure it with a light meter
low- low low+
nor- nor nor+
high- high high+
