Life History
a species’ lifetime pattern of growth, development, and reproduction
Asexual reproduction
reproduction results in the formation of genetically identical individuals
Sexual reproduction
reproduction involving the fusion of a female gamete (egg) and male gamete (sperm), which forms a zygote
Heterogony
the alternation between asexual and sexual reproduction
Hermaphroditism
having both male and female organs during life history
Sequential hermaphroditism
occurs when the individual is born one sex and changes sex at some point in their life history
Protandry (pro-tan-dree)
change from male to female (e.g. clown fish)
Protogyny (pro-toe-guy-knee)
change from female to male (e.g. Gag or Black sea bass)
Simultaneous hermaphroditism
occurs when the individual contains both male and female reproductive organs at the same time throughout their life history (e.g. slugs)
Parthenogenesis
a form of asexual reproduction in which growth and development of embryos occur without fertilization
Monogamy
is a mating system in which individuals form a lasting pair bond
Polygamy
more than one mate of one sex for a single individual of the other sex
Polygyny (poly-guy-knee)
polygamy in which a male has more than one female (man has more than one wife)
Polyandry (poly-an-dree)
polygamy in which a female has more than one male (woman has more than one husband)
Scramble competition polygyny
Males are enable to monopolize a limited resource. There is a short window of breeding and a giant free for all.
Lek polygyny
Males display and gather at a courtship arena and they show off…. Female chooses a mate.
Explosive breeding assemblages
sexes converge over a short synchronized breeding period (mate with whoever they can)
Promiscuity
(one to one or many and no pair bound formed) implies no durable associations, mating is a matter of temporary contact (also called polygynandry)
Semelparity
is to grow many years, then reproduce once before dying
Iteroparity
reproductive effort is spread out over many episodes over a long lifetime
