life events Flashcards
what was Holmes and Rahes research
Two doctors dealt with people with heart disease and made notes on 5000 records. They made up 43 common events and made 400 people to rate these events on psychological adjustment.
score under 150 increases the chance of stress related illness by 30%
score over 300 increases chance by 80%
Rahes research procedure
2,500 male American soldiers
used the 42 life events of what had happened in the previous 6 months
next 6 months a detailed record of their health
Rahes conclusion
There was a correlation between mens LCU score and illness experienced.
correlation coefficient of 0.118 so wouldn’t be statistically significant (other factors will play a part )
How should each research be taken
Taken with caution as are weak support as isnt a representative sample
e.g sailors jobs are usually very stressful and restricted to men meaning there was a beta bias
evaluation
negative –> culturally biased as is individualistic rather than culturalist meaning perhaps they have less support from community
age isn’t put in place, younger people wont have divorces and spouses dying
validity can be questioned
no cause and effect
positive –> great rough outline , research is still used today as mental health is key and very important
measuring life events
SSRS scale
5000 patient records (objectivity in 43 events created)
400 patients rated them
under 150 increase of 30%
over 300 increase of 80%
