Life and Death Flashcards
Gensis 1 says:
7 days : Light and dark Clouds and oeans Sun moon and stars Land plants and trees fish and birds man and animals god rested :/
Give a couple of Christian viewpoints on creation
Literalist: ITS RIGHT HONESTLY, EVIDENCE BASED SCIENCE IS WRONg
Non-Literalist: its a myth (like the moon landings)
Not literal but there are still clear periods of creation similar to scienc
God made it
Evidenced science is undeniable
Why do literal Christians cry over Darwin?
See Darwinian evolution as an attack on their beliefs, if we evolved by chance there is no place for the soul
Science and religion do they get along?
no:
if bible contradicts science then science is wrong
God revealed his truth in scripture
science gives an accurate picture of the world
yes:
religion says why, science says how
they say that God was the first cause of the Big Bang and evolution
Define dominion and stewardship
Dominion: Ruling over the earth, exploiting resources as we’re in charge
“Love your neighbour” did not include animals
Stewardship: Living in harmony with the earth and nature, not exploiting it
being sustainable, green
What’s the difference between animal rights and welfare?
Animal rights is saying the humans don’t have the right to use animals for human purposes
Animal welfare is saying that we shouldn’t cause unnecessary harm to animals
Christian arguments for and against animal welfare
For: God made animals first in creation, they have a purpose
All life is sacred
Stewardship
Against: “God made mankind in his image” WE ARE SUPERIOR
dominion
‘love thy neighbour’ not including animals
Humanist arguments for and against animal welfare
For: Animals feel pain like us Extinction of other species cuz of human fault Moral/ethical grounds Against: Natural instinct to eat meat Human species top of the food chain
gimme a quote for the sanctity of life (you can basically use this is any question)
“God made man in his own image” Genesis 9:6
What do humanists think about the sanctity of life?
We only have one life so special
not God
no soul or afterlife to live on at death
Make everyone and us as happy as possible, benefit from compassion and kindness
What is quality of life and what are some factors?
The extent to which life is pleasurable or meaningful
living conditions, health, education, leisure, social interactions, disability, levels of pain, human rights granted
What are the rules in the UK on abortion and when was it legalized?
It was legalized in 1967 Legal before 24 weeks of pregnancy Two doctors must consent, must be a reason, quality of life usually of the mother or future baby inability to provide 1/3 women will have an abortion
Give the Roman Catholic and C of E views on abortion
Roman Catholic: Forbidden, life begins at conception
abortion is murder
the foetus has a right to live and develop, terminating the pregnancy is a great moral evil
C of E: Abortion is sometimes allowed
Mothers life is in danger or in the case of rape
quality of life should be considered and compassion used
Define Euthanasia
‘Easy death’ or ‘mercy killing’ if someone is suffering a painful death from a serious illness
Name the different types of Euthanasia
Voluntary, when someone asks for help to die
Active, when a person takes a specific course of action to end their own life
Passive, when life-sustaining treatment is removed
Involuntary, when death is forced upon someone e.g. the Nazis killing Jews and slavs
