Meaning restoration or return in Greek.
The idea that hell is NOT eternal and that the eschatological goal of the cosmos is perfection as pre-fall
BEATIFIC VISION
A face-to-face encounter with God
BOOK OF REVELATION
Last book of the NT, which tells of the Parousia. Written by John the Divine in Patmos approx. 90AD and interpreted in different ways (NT is written in Greek).
DISEMBODIED EXISTENCE
Existing without a physical body
DIVINE DECREE
God’s judgement or ruling
DOUBLE PREDESTINATION
God elects the righteous to heaven and condemns sinners to hell.
ELECTION (THEOLOGICAL)
Predestination, chosen by God for heaven or hell
ESCHATOLOGY
“Discussion (description) of the last things” at the end of time such as judgement of the world by God; battle between good v evil etc
GOSPEL OF MATTHEW
Approx. 75AD with the author interested in Jewish law and relationship with the new law of Jesus.
HADES AND GEHENNA
Hades is the place of departed spirits awaiting judgement. Gehenna is associated with death and pollution
KINGDOM OF GOD
Describes God’s rule whether in this world or in heaven.
LIMITED ELECTION
The view that God choses only a small number of people for heaven
LUCIFER
“Light Bearer” who was a fallen angel
MARAN ATHA
Aramaic term often translated as “O Lord, come!” Aramaic related to Hebrew and would have been spoken by Jesus

Someone who is killed because of their religion i.e. Maccabees C2nd BC
MILLENARIANISM
(Chiliastic Doctrine) Based on Revelation 20:2-5 and Christ returning and ruling on Earth for 1000 years
MORTAL SIN
Sin which is morally deficient and deliberate in defying God
ORIGINAL SIN
A state of wrongdoing in which people are born (according to some Christians) because of the sin of Adam and Eve
PARABLE
A story told to highlight a moral message
PAROUSIA
Used in Christianity to refer to the second coming of Christ.
PARTICULAR JUDGEMENT
Judgement for each person at the point of death
PERDITION
Eternal punishment
PHARISEES
Jewish religious leaders at the time of Jesus who unlike other Jewish leaders they believed in resurrection and angels
PURGATORY
A place where people go, temporarily after death to be cleansed of sin before they are fit to live with God
RESURRECTION
Living on after death in a glorified physical form in a new realm
SADDUCEES
A political party at the time of Jesus who rejected ideas of an afterlife
SHEOL
OT equivalent to Hades
SINGLE PREDESTINATION
God elects the righteous to heaven and the evil select hell themselves
UNIVERSALISM
The view that all people will be saved
UNLIMITED ELECTION
The view that all people are called to salvation but only a few will be saved
VENIAL SIN
Errors of judgement and made due to a lack of moral knowledge which can be absolved through repentance
Origen (184 – 253AD)
Theologian and writer of influence (influenced by Plato!!). Important work was “De Principlis”
Gregory of Nyssa (335 – 395AD)
Influential teacher and preacher. Indebted to the ideas of Plato and Origen.
Dante Alighieri (1265 – 1321)
Florence, Italy – statesman and poet. In his “Divine Comedy”, he describes his journey through hell (Inferno) and heaven (Paradiso). Main theological influence was Thomas Aquinas
Paul Tillich (1886 – 1965)
German-American Lutheran Philosopher who was influenced by existentialism (a modern philosophical movement stressing the importance of personal experience and . The individual is seen as a free agent in a deterministic and seemingly “meaningless universe”.
John-Paul Satre (1905 – 1980)
French Philosopher and political activist. Major work – “Being and Nothingness” (1943)
