Proverbs (esp. 4:23; 31) - apply specific wisdom to the marriage covenant
Song of Solomon - refer to as an illustration of the joys of Christian marriage, as it resembles Christ and His Bride

88
Q

How would you counsel someone facing financial crisis?

A

I would relate the financial crisis to all manner of difficulties in life. I would assure the brother that our Father has cattle on a thousand hills (Ps 50:10), that His grace is sufficient for us in our weakness (2 Cor 12:9), and that God who clothes the lilies of the field, sustains the sparrow, and feeds the ravens (Luke 12:22-31, Mt 6:25-33) will take care of us. If appropriate, I would also exhort the man to apply himself to gainful labor (2 Thessalonians 3:10).

89
Q

How would you counsel someone facing anxiety?

A

Call him to look away from himself and his situation, and to look to Christ (Col 3; Eph 1). I would refer to Romans 7 to show that we must always combat our sinful discouragements and anxieties. I would also apply comfort from 1 John 1:5-10 and 2:12-14, and assurance of God’s love (1 John 5:13).

90
Q

How would you counsel someone presenting a child for baptism?

A

I would refer to Matthew 19:14, when Jesus welcomed the children to Himself. Also, I would refer very generally to the pattern established in the OT and continued in the NT of identifying households with the visible church, and the great blessing that this is for our children (and for us).

Q

How would you counsel someone suffering from the death of a close relative?

A

If the relative was a believer, I would encourage the person not to grieve as those without hope, and to steer the person to 1 Corinthians 15-16. If the relative was not a believer, I would comfort the believing bereaved as best I could by using John 14, or by simply empathizing and praying with/for them.

92

How would you counsel someone struggling with homosexuality?

A

I would emphasize the fact that God is faithful to sanctify even our desires and to renew our wills in Christ. I would point him to 1 Corinthians 6:12-17, Romans 12, and Ephesians 6. I would also call him to watch over his heart (Proverbs 4:23), and to take very seriously the design of God for man to be helped by woman in the context of marriage (Genesis 2).

93
Q

How would you counsel someone considering abortion?

A

I would direct the person to Psalm 139, Psalm 103, and Psalm 8 to demonstrate the purposes of God in the conception and birth of children. I would show that the only examples of “abortion” in the Bible are infanticides ordered by hideous pagan overlords (Exodus 1, Luke 2). I would then show the expectant mother that she is not alone in the raising up of a godly seed in the household of faith, and that the covenant community is here to support her and to help her to raise her child in the Faith.

94
Q

How would you counsel someone enslaved to addiction?

A

I would focus on the attractiveness and desirableness of Christ, encouraging the man in the expulsive power of a new affection. Depending upon the addiction, I would go to 1 Corinthians 6:19 (the body is a temple, to be holy and pure). I would also encourage the brother that God provides us with His sanctifying grace in the conquest of Satan’s strongholds, and particularly in the fight against lusts, gluttony, and addictions of various kinds.
