What is mechanistic theory?
The notion that mankind is rational, therefore capable of creating a state that reflects needs of a man. Direct criticism of “divine right of kings”.
What is egotistical individualism?
Naturally drawn to independence or being in charge of own destiny?
What is economic liberalism?
This is a market economy which has little government intervention.
Define state of nature
This is the state where humans lived without authority.
What is social contract?
This is where citizens voluntarily consent to accept the states governing for an improved situation and to resolve conflict.
What is the harm principle?
This is where the state should only interfere if the decisions that someone makes harm another person.
Foundational equality
This means that everyone is born equally and has the same rights.
What is equality of opportunity?
This is where all individuals have the same access to resources without any discrimination.
Define limited government
This is where the government’s only purpose is to represent the interests of the governed. It includes a seperate executive and legislative.
What is laissez-faire capitalism?
This is a free market which means that the economy will be stronger if the government does not interfere.
What is negative liberty?
This means that humans have the freedom from restraint and have full power to fulfil their potential.
Define minimal state
This means that the government will have minimal power and will only interfere to resolve disputes.
Define developmental individualism.
This means that we choose to make progress.
What is positive freedom (liberty)
This means that humans have the power to achieve potential but do not always have hte potentital as not genuinley freee.
Define an enabling state.
This is where the most disadvantaged in society need support from the state to have liberty.
What is social liberalism?
This is where all humans have equality in terms of justice
