All liberals believe that humans should be thought of as individuals, each with their own unique interests and talents

All humans are born with equal moral worth and have certain inalienable rights

Liberals have an optimistic view of human nature- all human beings are capable of reason and tolerance
Last thing that liberals agree on in terms of human nature
We all have the capacity to progress and improve and recognise that if we want others to respect our natural right to ‘life, liberty and property’ we must be tolerant of others lifestyle choices
What view do CL take on human nature (individualism)
Associated primarily with egotistical individualism- people are primarily concerned with their own self-interest and don’t feel any sort of collective responsibility for society
What else do CL’s think of human nature (individualism)
Influenced by the Bentham’s utilitarianism- humans naturally gravitate to decisions that produce the greatest happiness for the greatest number. Rational.
What do CL’s think of human nature in terms of tolerance
CL’s agree with Mill’s harm principle- it is not justifiable to interfere with self-regarding actions, even if they are harmful to the individual.
What do ML’s think of human nature (individualism)
And quote from Mill
Associated with developmental individualism- focuses on the extent to which all individuals can grow and achieve their potential
“There is more to human nature than the pursuit of simple, immediate lower pleasures”.
What does ML view on individuality mean for decision making
Higher and lower pleasures- the actions with the most utility are those that enable us to progress and develop our individuality.
