the corrupt process of forming political alliances and winning support from other politicians in order to have enough support to be prime minister.

the most prominent politician of the liberal era. 1901-1914 is generally known as Giolittan era.
what were Giolitti’s aims?
make Italy a modern unified country where masses shared values and had faith in parliament, later on he had to try and gain support from opposite parties
Aims of liberal state?
gain overseas colonies, economic growth, solve roman question, create identity for new country, reclaim land, reduce division between north and south, strong political leadership, create united patriotism between citizens

what is socialism?
set of beliefs that states all people are equal. Production, distribution and exchange should be owned by community as a whole.
what is nationalism?
A nation’s wish to be politically independent or patriotic love/loyalty for your country.
what is an anarchist?
extreme form of libertarian (so believes there should be no government)
what was the affect of the Libyan war in terms of support for Giolliti from socialists and nationalists?
Nationalists wanted further Italian expansion. Socialists withdrew support for liberals as went against beliefs.
what was ‘red week’? and what did it demonstrate?
national strikes called by the PSI accompanied by widespread violence, especially in North and Central Italy. Hundreds of workers died.
Demonstrated the difficulty of achieving national unity.
