Introduction
Turn of the Century - Increased National Competition

A

The turn of the century was a time of increased national competition. The USA and Japan had begun a process of rapid industrialisation and had economies that were becoming more and more globally important. The German economy was growing rapidly, outstripping British economic growth in the early 20th century. This was also a period of military tension, and the years leading up to the outbreak of war in 1914 were characterised by arms races and the building of international pressure.
