1908 children’s act (children’s charter)

A

✅ Made sure children were in seperate remand houses and prisons (borstals) to make sure they weren’t looking up to adult criminals and getting tips and tricks
✅❌ it became illegal for children to beg

A

✅ Low paid workers could claim compensation for injuries received at work
❌ this also meant if an injury was received out of work then they wouldn’t be able to work and provide for themselves or their families

✅ Set up boards to negotiate a minimum wage in box laceX chain making and tailoring trades etc
❌ there was no attempt made to define what a minimum wage was so no one knew if they were being paid reasonably or unreasonably

✅Maximum 60 hour week for shop workers
✅ compulsory half day holidays each week (as well as Sunday)
✅ washing facilities to be made available in every shop

1908 old age pensions act

A

✅ Pensions of five shillings a week were to be paid to poor people aged 79 and over
✅ by 1914 one million people reviewing benefits
❌ life expectancy from 1906-1914 was 50 years old and under so very few people would live to the age of 70 to receive a pension
❌ needed birth certificate to prove age but not many people had one

1911 national insurance act part 1

A

✅Sickness insurance scheme was introduced, covered low paid workers; those warning less than £160 yearly (15 million people)
✅ also received free medical treatment from a GP
✅ women were given money for being pregnant from the time being off work as unable to work and get money

1911 national insurance act part 2

A

❌ Unemployment insurance scheme was set up it only covered workers in 6 specific trades where the employment fluctuated so not everyone was insured
✅ unemployment benefit of 7 shillings a weeks was paid for 15 weeks
❌ worker would have to register at labour exchange to receive benefits
