1906 election
The Liberal party won by a landslide allowing their reforms to be enacted .
Chancellor David Lloyd George declared a war on poverty with Herbert Asquith the PM leading the reform programme
Free school meals 1906
Provided government money to local authorities to give children one free school meal per day.
By 1914 150,000 children were getting one good meal a day from the local councils.
1907 school medical inspections
Inspections carried out in school to check children’s medical state (e.g lice etc) however treatment wasn’t made free until 1912 when medical clinics were set up.
1908 Children and Young persons act
Made it illegal to sell a child tobacco and alcohol and to send out/ neglect a child.
1909 Old Age Pensions
Pensions were introduced for those over 70 who earned less than 31.5 pounds a year.
1909 Labour exchanges
Labour exchanges set up acting as a place where men could go looking for work
1911 National insurance Act (Pt 1 Health Insurance)
Workers paid a small fee every week into a scheme with the government and employers adding to further contribution. Any worker who became ill could receive:
1. 10 shilling per week if they were off sick for up to 13 weeks and 5 shillings per week for another 13 weeks.
2.treatment from a doctor linked to the scheme
3.Maternity grants to pay for baby essentials.
Poorest workers might not be able to afford the weekly payments
1911 National insurance Act (Pt 2 Unemployment insurance)
Workers in certain trades paid a sum of money per week unto a scheme where if they became unemployed they could receive:
. 7 shillings per week in unemployment benefits for up 15 weeks.
However not enough for a family to live off.
