-lack of protective factors (such as a supportive family or healthcare)
office environment that can help put an LGBTQ+ pt at ease within healthcare facility
- waiting room/reception: have at least one unisex restroom, LGBT-specific media, visible non-discrimination statement, posters showing racially and ethnically diverse same-sex couples or posters from nonprofit HIV/AIDS or LGBT organizations, brochures about LGBTQ health concerns
- make sure intake form has gender inclusive options (transgender, other w/ space for pt to fill in); also includes sexual orientation identity and option for other for most categories
- provider interaction (perusing intake forms, asking pronouns, rainbow pin on white jacket, disclosure if appropriate)
compare and contrast language/behaviors of healthcare professionals that can either alienate or welcome an LGBTQ+ pt to practice
Welcoming LGBTQ pt: ask about their experiences/open ended Qs, acknowledge risk factors, set welcoming stage for deeper discussions; use appropriate intake form, be honest about knowledge, need to assess what is present; normalize conversation
Alienating: judgmental, approaching subjects in a wrong way; premature outing = BAD; dont open the door to coming out before they’re ready
social and personal barriers that prevent open discussions of gender and sexuality bw physicians and LGBTQ+ pts
-assess where patient is first before opening the door to coming out (make sure THEY are ready); create safe and welcoming environment
