LFTs Flashcards
What liver enzymes are found on the membrane?
ALP & GGT
Which liver enzymes are found in the cytoplasm?
AST, ALP & LD
Which liver enzyme is found in both the cytoplasm & mitochondria?
AST
Which liver enzymes are found in other tissues?
AST - bone & muscles
ALP - bone & placenta
GGT - biliary epithelium & kidney
What enzyme changes are seen in liver necrosis (i.e. toxin & virus?
Cell damage leading to release of LD, AST & ALP
AST particularly elevated with toxin
What enzyme changes are seen in biliary disease?
Cell stress (biliary epithelium) & bile dissolves membranes Release of membrane enzymes GGT & ALT
What LFTs reflect intra & extra-heptatic jaundice?
Intrahepatic - some elevation of GGT & ALT
Extra - marked elevation (10x) of GGT & ALT
What LFT results reflect chronic/resolving injury?
ALT > AST
What LFT results reflect acute injury?
AST > ALT
What enzyme is predominantly elevated in acute hepatitis?
ALT - marked elevation, much higher than in chronic hepatitis
