Over extension
Children apply a word learnt to any person or object which displays the same characteristics
Under extension
A child uses the lexeme in a narrow sense and doesn’t understand that other people or objects can be described in a similar manner
Why do children acquire concrete nouns innititally?
To refer to the immediate environment (a young child won’t understand abstract concepts. Once object permanence is understood they acquire abstract nouns but may still over generalise meaning)
When are abstract nouns acquired
Once object permanence is understood - may still over generalise these meanings
