Caretaker expansion
Caretakers deliberately use lexis to expand the child’s word stock and encourage them to use these words too
Invented lexis
Children often use unheard of words, eg “buffalosarous”
Monosyllabic and polysyllabic
Single or multi syllable words. Accordance with development stage
Over and under extension
Applying the word to too many or too little things
Synonyms
Ability to use alternative words, for example “huge” instead of just “big”
Mismatch
Using the wrong term for something without logical link
Concrete nouns
In early stages, children’s lexis is mainly consisting of concrete nouns as they have a labelling function which can be applied to their direct environment.
Hypernyms and hyponyms
Hypernyms: general term, eg cutlery
Hyponym: specific term under the general umbrella, eg spoon
