Open word classes
Most popular word classes in the english language
verb
a word that shows a state of being, action or event
Nouns
a word that names a thing or a concept
Adjectives
a word that modifies a noun

Adverbs
a word that modifies a verb, adjectives or other adverbs
Closed word classes
Provide connections and cohesions between other words
Pronoun
substitutes for a noun e.g. he, she, they, it
Determiner
Adds detail or clarity to a noun e.g. the, my, some
Preposition
Provides connections between words e.g. in, on, between
Conjunction
Provides connections between phrases, clauses and sentences e.g. but, and, because
Subclass
helps us understand subtle differences within word class categories and explains why and how it appears in a text
Proper noun
Refers to names of peoples or places e.g. James, England
Abstract Noun
Refers to states, feelings and concepts that do not have a physical existence e.g. love, anger
Concrete nouns
Refers to objects that have physical existence e.g. countable (Can be pluralised) and non countable (no plural form)
Material Verb
shows action or events e.g. hit, jump, wash
Relational verb
Identifies properties or shows states of being
Mental verb
Shows internal processes such as thinking
Verbal verb
Shows external processes of communicating through speech
Base adjectives and adverbs
The basic form of an adjective or adverb, modifying a noun
Comparative adjective and adverb
A form used to compare two instances
Superlative adjective and adverb
A form used to compare more than two instances, identifying a best example
Personal pronoun
Refers to people and are differentiated in terms of person, number and gender
Demonstrative pronouns
Orientate the reader or listener towards a person,object , or idea either nearby or further away
Indefinite pronouns
Refers to a person, object or idea that is non specific
Article determiners
Shows that something is definite or indefinite
Possessive determiners
Shows ownership
Quantifier determiners
Shows either specific or non specific quantities of a noun

Link words or larger structures such as phrases and causes together where they are equal
