Standard English (SE)
Vocabulary and grammar considered ‘correct’, most suitable (government, education and law).
Elevated lexis
Often standard and is usually polysyllabic and used in formal contexts.
Common lexis
Often standard and is usually monosyllabic and used in everyday, and informal contexts.
Colloquialisms
language which is informal but still standard (bloke instead of man).
Slang
Non - standard English, used in particular social groups and tends to go out of fashion (groovy, wicked).
Regional dialect
Non - standard varieties of the English language spoken by particular regions (Derby, bread = cob).
Taboo
Socially offensive words (f**k, sexist, racist and homophobic terms).
Vulgarisms
Not as offensive as taboo, still impolite (arse instead of bottom).
Politically correct language (PC)
Language that aims to be neutral (stop stereotypes and perpetuation).
Archaisms
Words no longer used in the English language ( thee, thou).
Jargon
A lexical variety used by people in a specific occupation or role (gigabyte - computing).
Neologisms
A newly created word (internet = interconnect + network)
