Pre-Verbal
The Holophrastic/ One Word Stage
The Two Word Stage
The Telegraphic
The Post Telegraphic
What does the pre-verbal stage involve?

Example: “up”, “drink”
What happends at the two word stage?
More complex version of the holophrastic stage. Able to express more.
Example: “Daddy go”, “Ball gone”, “Mummy bag”
What theory does lexical development support? Why?
Cognitive theory. Intellectual development of the child.
What happens at the telegraphic stage?
Strings things together to form sentences.
Example: “I want ball”
What form of virtuous error can be involved in lexical development?
Overgeneralisation.
What is overgeneralisation?
The application of grammatical rules (such as plurals and past tense suffices) to words like irregular nouns and verbs.
Example: “I runned”, “They shotted their arrows at the baddies”
What other theory can be used to further support lexical development?
Brown’s Regression Curve (1973)
