Lewis Diagram Flashcards
1
Q
who made the Lewis diagram
A
Gilbert Newton Lewis
2
Q
what does the Lewis diagram do
A
it uses Lewis notation which is a way to represent molecules with atoms, using their valence electrons.
3
Q
how does a lewis diagram work
A
We use the chemical symbol to represent the nucleus and core electrons, and we use dots or crosses to represent the valence electrons.
4
Q
how do we draw a Lewis diagram
A
When drawing Lewis diagrams of individual atoms, imagine that there is a box around the element symbol. First, draw one electron on each side (top, bottom, left, and right) of the chemical symbol and then, add a second electron to each side. There can never be more than two dots on each side.
